Forces and mechanisms

Simple machines

An inclined plane, a wedge, a screw and a wheel and axle: less force over a longer distance. The work stays the same.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

Why do removal workers push a heavy cupboard up a plank into the van, instead of lifting it?

Lifting a cupboard up to the floor of a van takes a huge amount of force, all at once. Up a sloping plank it is much easier, even though you have to cover a longer distance.

That sloping plank is a simple machine: an inclined plane. You find the same idea in an axe, a screw and a door handle. They have no motor, but they let you do the same work with less force.
