Levers

With a lever you lift something heavy with less force. What counts is force times arm: F₁×a₁=F₂×a₂. There are three classes of levers.

Why

Why can a child on a seesaw lift an adult?

An adult weighs two or three times as much as a child. Yet they can play on the seesaw together. The adult shuffles towards the middle, the child stays right at the end, and suddenly they balance.

The secret is the distance to the fulcrum. The further from the fulcrum you push, the less force you need. You find that idea in a crowbar, a pair of scissors, a wheelbarrow and even your own arm.
