Sensors and control

A sensor measures, a controller decides using a threshold, an actuator acts. That is how a night light, a thermostat and an automatic door work. Open loop or closed loop?

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

How does the supermarket door know you are coming?

You walk to the entrance with your shopping bag and the glass doors slide open before you even touch them. A moment later they close again by themselves.

Nobody presses a button. Above the door hangs a sensor that notices movement. A controller receives that signal and switches on a motor. Those three steps, measuring, deciding and acting, are in almost every device that does something by itself.
