Electric circuits

How to build and switch a circuit: switches, push buttons and two-way switches, symbols in a diagram, lamps in series or parallel, and why a fuse protects you.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

How can you switch the stair light on downstairs and off again upstairs?

In the evening you go upstairs. At the bottom of the stairs you press the switch and the light comes on. At the top you press another switch and the light goes off again. The next morning it works just as well the other way round.

With one ordinary switch that is impossible. An electrician uses two two-way switches with two wires between them. If you can think up and draw a circuit like that, you can also make a doorbell, a bike light or a toy car work the way you want.
