Energy and electricity

Energy in appliances

Every appliance converts energy. Part of it is useful, the rest is mostly lost as heat. You learn to work out efficiency, power in watts and energy in kWh.

Why

Why does an old incandescent bulb get burning hot while an LED lamp hardly gets warm?

Your grandparents may still have an incandescent bulb. If you touch it after it has been on for an hour, you burn your fingers. You can almost just pick up an LED lamp that gives as much light.

Both lamps receive electrical energy, but they handle it very differently. The incandescent bulb mostly makes heat and only a little light. If you understand that difference, you can choose appliances that waste less energy and cost less.
