Energy and electricity

Renewable energy

Sun, wind and water never run out. You learn how solar panels and wind turbines work, what Wp means, how much they deliver and why storage is needed.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

Why are there solar panels on so many Flemish roofs and wind turbines turning in the North Sea?

Cycle down a Flemish street and count the roofs with solar panels: there are lots. On the beach in clear weather you can sometimes see wind turbines far out at sea.

You can make electricity by burning fuel, but fuel runs out and gives off CO₂. Sun and wind do not run out. They do have a drawback: they are not always there when you need them. Here you discover how technicians deal with that.
