Pulleys and tackles

A pulley guides a rope over a wheel. A fixed pulley changes the direction, a movable pulley and a block and tackle share the load over more rope parts: F=G/n.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

Why does the hook of a building crane hang from a block with several wheels and ropes?

A building crane lifts concrete blocks, steel beams and pallets of bricks. Look closely at the hook: it does not hang from one rope, but from a cable that runs back and forth over wheels a few times.

Every part of the cable that carries the load takes some of the weight. The more parts, the less force is needed. That is the idea behind pulleys and tackles, and you can build it yourself with a rope and two cotton reels.
