Technology at home: lock, tap and bicycle

How a cylinder lock only turns with the right key, how a tap lets water through and mixes it, and how far your bike goes with one turn of the pedals.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

Why does your key open the front door and the neighbours' key does not, even though they look almost the same?

Lay two house keys side by side. They are the same length, the same width and made of the same metal. Only the notches along the edge are a little different. Yet only one of them fits your front door.

Behind such a small difference lies clever mechanics. The same goes for the kitchen tap and for your bike. If you understand how they work, you can use them better, look after them and sometimes repair them yourself.
