Gears and drives
Gears pass a turning motion on. The ratio of the teeth decides how fast and how strongly the driven gear turns: n₂=
Why
Why do you change to another gear on your bike when you have to ride up a hill?
On a flat road you pedal calmly and still ride fast. But on a steep climb, like the Wall of Geraardsbergen, you can hardly get the pedals round. Then you change gear, and suddenly it works again, even though you ride more slowly.
When you change gear, the chain runs over a different sprocket. The number of teeth at the front and back decides how many times your back wheel turns per pedal stroke, and how much force you have to put in. That is the secret of every drive, from a bike to a kitchen mixer.
