Joints

Screws, bolts, zips, glue, rivets, welding and sewing: which joint can you take apart again, which cannot, and which suits wood, metal, fabric or cardboard?

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a technology teacher.

Why

Why can you take a flat-pack bed apart when you move house, but not a chair with glued legs?

When you move, you turn the screws out of the bed, lay the boards flat in the van and put it back together in the new house. With a chair whose legs are glued into the seat, that does not work without breaking something.

Every time two parts have to be joined, a designer chooses a joint. Does it have to come apart later? What are the parts made of? How much force does the joint have to take? With those questions you can choose the right joint yourself.
