Materials and their properties

Wood, metals, plastics, textiles, glass and rubber each have their own properties. By testing you find out which material suits a product best.

Why

Why is a cooking pot made of metal, but with a handle of wood or plastic?

You put a pot of water on the hob. After a few minutes the bottom is scorching hot and the water is boiling. Yet you can still take hold of the pot by its handle without burning yourself.

The designer chose a different material for each part. The bottom has to pass the heat on quickly, the handle must not. If you know the properties of materials, you can make the right choice for every part of a product.
